The Spacelords - Water Planet

It doesn't seem so long ago that I talked about the last album by Spacedelic rock trio The Spacelords 'Liquid Sun’; unbelievably 18 months have gone by and its with pleasure I’m able to pass on some words about their latest trip 'Water Planet'.

Listeners and lovers of both 'synapse' and 'Liquid Sun' will doubtlesly be hugely satisfied with the latest release; the sound remains heavy and expansive and it’s hard not to wonder how the band as a trio manage to make such an immense sound. Within the music are fantastic Stoner space jams filled with creative brain melting panache, in fact I'm not sure describing the three tracks as jams is doing them justice, there is far more focus here and control as the music unveils its many treasures at every turn, the journey may be long but there is never a dull moment.

'Plasma Thruster' launches the record in to orbit, pulsating as it grows over spaced out basslines whilst majestic psychedelic guitar licks lead the way, the tracks has a sturdy build and thanks to the hypnotic drum patterns moves ever forward over 11 minutes that are over almost in the blink of an eye.
'Metamorphosis' follows and demonstrates echoes (Yeah I said it) of very early 70’s Floyd in terms atmosphere; the track builds and bursts with cosmic flair before finally launching itself into its final blast of urgent stoned out rocking.
'Nag 'Kanya' completes the trilogy of tracks over 20 minutes. Trippy Eastern flavours swirl transcendentally to assist the music as it evolves to peak as a giant freak-out reminiscent of the final section to Floyds ‘One of These Days’; I’d be very surprised if ‘Meddle’ wasn’t a big influence on the band, not just on this record but generally speaking too.
The trio have released without a doubt their finest album to date, it’s a record that lives up to the anticipation that inevitably comes when a band with a magnificent track record such as The Spacelords announce new material. 40 minutes zoom by and ‘Water planet’ is one of the most satisfying records you’ll hear right now.
Tonzonen Records have set the date for a Gatefold splatter Vinyl release which is limited to 1000 copies; shipping date is around November 20th and includes unlimited streaming of Water Planet via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download, Cd and streaming platforms are available now.

The Judge - Tell It To The Judge

The Judge began life in Granite City, Illinois. After the band’s initial incarnation as Unfallen – with Jarrett on guitar and Anderson on drums – the duo quickly became a trio for a period, touring music venues across the St. Louis area, with new member Kevin Jones taking up bass and vocal duties. Increasingly influenced by the Britannic rock majesty of groups such as Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, along with that unshakeable ‘band of brothers’ mentality’ in 2013, the trio finally discovered the missing piece of a puzzle with the addition of their very own, enigmatic, front man, Tyler Swope.
As a criminally young quartet happily graduating from the riffs of old, Jarrett and Anderson started to uncover a new wave of hard rock acts occupying radio waves and record store shelves. Music by the likes of Graveyard and Kadavar helped inspire The Judge to develop their own special breed of slow burning psychedelia and sonic stew of traditional classic rock’n’roll with heavy backroom blues.
From inception, to release of the full length debut took some time.  When I spoke with the band in December last year, they told me they were pretty much finished on the follow up a mere 6 months after the debuts release; The Judge buzz with an energy and drive that runs through their songs, they're born of a joy and love of what they create and they certainly aren’t going to let the grass grow under their feet.
Of the songs featured, ‘Empty Halls’ opens the record with majestic Rock’N’Roll swagger and launches into an infectious riff and groove. The cool run continues with more bluesy, hard rock roadhouse belters 'From the Mountain', 'Strange Ways' and 'Changing World'.
'Islands' and 'High Flyin' are a little heavier and slower in pace, but no less a great match to the other tracks in tone. The remaining 2 tracks on the record 'Darkest Days and Parade of Sin' continue to power the LP forward, guaranteeing the album never runs out of steam. The record is drenched in beautiful nostalgic nods and ballsy tones from start to finish and delivered joyously; stylistically there are nods to rocks royalty and the sound of 70s resonates throughout, yet still managing to hold its own, as a modern hard rock record.

‘Tell it to The Judge’ hasn't failed to make me happy every single time I listen to it; brilliant music played by a band that clearly love what they’re doing and want share it with a wider audience. What more can you ask for? Kudos again to label Ripple Music for releasing the bands second album and once more ensuring that such great work is out in the great wide open for all to discover and enjoy.
Expect to see this on Atom Heart Mutha's end of year lists and I can't wait to hear album number 3.

Whitenails - First Trip.

Quebecs six-piece stoner rockers, Whitenails, play amped-up, rock 'n roll riddled with massive riffs and  vintage swagger; their debut album 'First Trip' has been given a vinyl release via Kozmik Artifactz, following its initial CD release on Magnetic Eye Records.
Whitenails were started in 2015 by guitarist Taylor Johnson (ex-Atomis) following a meeting with local tattoo artist and guitarist Danahé Cote. They agreed to jam in Cote's "side project."  Six months later, following a combination of hard work and a solid live reputation as a powerful act, WhiteNails opened for The Sword and Royal Thunder.
First Trip is a great debut; a really confident headbanger, full to the brim with fuzzed up riffs and stoner attitude.  How the band have managed to make and release music in such little time,  yet delivering a confident well-constructed rock LP, is a triumph.  There are no fancy tricks on display, just good old fashioned ballsy rock; the kind you get from QOTSA on a good day.  Sabbath are in there somewhere too, but as with all savvy bands, Whitenails know how to take something familiar in a vintage style  and make a sound of their own.  The band effortlessly deliver eight slabs of groove heavy, sonic Rock'n'Roll; tracks such as 'In My Blood' and 'Silver Linings' show a will  to conquer and a desire to stick around for many years to come.  An album as strong as this deserves to be discovered and shared.  Get on it!
Hats off too to the designer of the wonderful, Fulci inspired, cover art work; it looks stunning and absolutely sells the flavour and tone of the music; very striking and very cool.  This is a great release and well worth your attention; seek it out and discover for yourself.

3 From Tonzonen Records.

There's something satisfying about knowing that when you put the needle to the record, on a new release from certain labels that what you're about to hear is not going to disappoint.
German underground pioneers Tonzonen is one of those labels; whilst I wouldn't claim to be an authority on the labels output, a scan of their back catalogue proves that, with the exception of a couple of releases, I've heard most everything they've put out.  Later this month sees the highly anticipated new, full length album from The Spacelords.  It's also a thrill to know that, one of my favourite new British bands 'Psychic Lemon' are about to release their second LP -  'Frequency Rhythm Distortion Delay' in early January, 2018 on Tonzonen too.
Followers of Atom Heart Mutha will know that, over the last 6 months, I've taken on a new regular radio show with Hard Rock Hell Radio, which in turn has made it a little less easier to get reviews out.  Regular blog content is starting to happen again and over the course of the last couple of months, Tonzonen have released 3 exceptional and different albums; it's those albums that I want to concentrate on now.

Nazca Space Fox - Nazca Space Fox

Nazca Space Fox are a trio from Frankfurt; their self titled debut is a curious thing!  Of the 7 tracks, 3 are long drawn out, evolving pieces that play as engaging, unhurried psychedelic Jams and the other 4 more direct shorter tracks.  In terms of pace and structure, they share some common ground with more modern, post rock bands.
Interestingly, the band have described their tracks as "starting straight like the Nazca Lines in the desert and rising to somewhere in outer space; like finding yourself in a cosmic thunderstorm, without knowing how you got stuck there."

Opening track 'Weltraumorgel' is a great example of this; whilst linear and direct in structure, it slowly evolves and elevates in to the cosmos, disciplined and without the need to go full freak out. 'Isolator' is another fine example of long haul emotive jamming.  As of label mates 'Knall' the band clearly demonstrate an ability to explore themes, as a band, without straying off into unnecessary chaotic noodling (not that this would be an issue!).

There are heavier tracks elsewhere, that are a little more stoner inflected such as 'Firebird' and the latter section of the brilliant 'Mindwalk'.
As debut's go; Nazca Space Fox is an enjoyable listen and serves as a great taster for things to come.

Karakorum - Beteigeuze

Karakorum beams the Kraut-Sound of the early 1970s, directly in the present and takes the listener on an intergalactic journey, or so they say.
Split into 3 sections over the course of the album; Betegeuze initially has much more in common with 70s Prog.  There are great melodies over the layered synths and long complicated, instrumental sets.  Stylistically, things change quickly; tempos rarely settle and there are fewer longer drawn out pieces.  It's undeniable that the band have drawn plenty of their influences from Zappa (much more so in the third act) and bands such as Camel and early career Genesis; but having played the album, a number of times, it feels like the band have actually managed to pack in a decades worth of different aspects and subgenres of 70's rock, resulting in a highly interesting and arresting listen.
Beteigeuze must have been an exhausting record to make; what sounds improvisational, or part of some prog rock stew, is in fact a far more focused affair.  Kudos has to go to producer, Eroc for piecing together something as complex as the frenetic 50 minutes on offer here.

Barrows - Obsidion
'Obsidion' is the third release by Los Angeles's Barrows, and is a concept album depicting the experience of a man, abducted from earth and brought to Obsidion; a place where dimension is indefinable and the boundaries of human consciousness cease to exist.
The album itself is a very cool mix of psych/krautrock, melded with beautifully played out, grand, electronic soundscapes.
Musically, Barrows share a cinematic feel that has common ground with Tangerine Dream. Tonally, and thematically very much science fiction inflected, their work is not unlike Tonzonens 'Sounds Of New Soma'.
there are Bursts of motorik drumming, with nods to Can and Neu! on the the second track 'Entrada'  whilst there are  post rock influences on the title track itself and actually not dissimilar to Nazca Space Fox.
Obsidion works incredibly well as one piece.  The concept album, as it's intended to be heard, will reward you with multiple listens.  The album can be downloaded for name your price on Bandcamp.  I highly recommended that once you've done that,  order a copy on vinyl from Tonzonen.
