Album Review...Sula Bassana - Organ Accumulator

The last time I spoke with the multi talented and spaced out psych wizard Dave Schmidt from Sulatron Records was in December.  He released the LP 'Shipwrecked' under his Sula Bassana Moniker back in January 2016 and we were speaking about how it was one of my favourite albums of the year.
I asked him about his future plans, and he talked about how he was trying to spend less time touring, to work on more of his recorded works.
Dave had already recorded a new LP and explained "It was made, basically, on organs and portable keyboards; but with added synthesisers and drum machines."
In addition, Schmidt's revealed that he was using guitar and bass in one of the songs and the album was to be be called "Organ Accumulator", true to his word, just one year, after the release of Shipwrecked;  It's here.

Opening track 'Lichtbündel' is a mellow synth kosmische trip; a beautifully blissed out tune, that takes in elements of hypnotic dub, yet is very reminiscent of the early 90's electronic music by The Orb.  This is easily one of my favourite tracks of the year so far.  The album continues in the same cosmic manner with 'Morgentau' another other worldly synth exploration that glimmers rhythmically over a simple yet enhancing melody.  'The Frogs' has an irresistible beat with a sinister oscillation and keyboard progression; working effectively and delivering another album high point. The title track itself is a real treat, starting as an electronic motorik driven piece it soon moves and evolves into a guitar lead Spacerock monster, the addition of different instrumentation really elevates the track to another stratosphere.

'Grashamster' has darker tones than previous tracks, its feel is a much more expansive galactic fuzzy style that resonates over its slowly rolling drum groove.
The Final Track 'Nebelschwaden' is much more cinematic as it unravels over its 10 minute length; its another mellow journey of cerebral joy and a more than fitting way to conclude the record.

I imagine Shipwrecked may have been a tough record to follow; it was without question one of the best records of 2016. To approach a follow up within a year with something as different, and yet familiar sounding as Organ Accumulator must've been quite a task.  As you might expect, its sound is very much within the styles of classic German electronic music; but also demonstrates a contemporary feel. Being prolific, yet keeping the quality control up to a high standard is clearly something Dave Schmidt doesn't have a problem with.

If you buy the CD issue, you'll also get the Sula Bassana tracks from the split release with 3am originally released in 2014; bonus!

Album Review...Sounds of New Soma - La Grande Bellezza

Sounds of New Soma are back with their third neo-krautrock trip, the follow up to last years excellent 'Moebius Tunnel'.
La Grande Bellezzais marks the return of music enthusiasts Alexander Djelassi and Dirk Raupach of the neo-krautrock project 'Sounds Of New Soma'. The duo are known for their intensified oscillations between electroexperimental soundscapes and blistering space rock.

Opening with 'Bundesgartenschau' the album starts its ascent into space with atmospheric and beautifully orchestrated swirls of synths over  tempo setting bass and rhythmic drum patterns.  'Der Gruene Pilz' is a peculiar blend of echoey German spoken word, chimes and almost random drum bursts; whilst baffling to me, it still manages to fit within the  constructs and flow of album, as it leads in to the fantastic 'Einheit des Lichtes': fans of 70s German synth and electronic soundtracks of John Carpenter will find much to love within the tracks ten minute length. 'Garten des Lichtes' follows that same same Carpenteresque theme of squelchy synth and scoff horror tone as it begins, but then leads way to a more weightless electronic ambience, and again, is cinematic in tone.

Elsewhere, on the record is 'Spandau' a more jazz inflected psych-funk piece, led by saxophone and infectious drum trickery.  Stand out track 'Wurmloch' offers up a magnificent slice of kosmische rock. 'Wahn' is a repetitive pattern that drives the track over unpredictable burst of synth noise and cymbals, with occasional, fuzzed up electronica working in stark contrast to the more luminous pieces that have gone before. The record ends with 'Duftnote' a more gentle track that acts as a musical descent and return to calm, as its floats delicately to its final fading notes.

La Grande Bellezza is a beautiful and at times, arresting journey. Whilst it occasionally sounds familiar in its more cinematic moments, it also does incredible and unpredictable things. For their third release, Sounds of New Soma have exceeded expectations by crafting an engaging record of cosmic wonder, and also strengthen the already strong reputation of label Tonzonen Records; this an album I'll be playing for the months to come, whilst awaiting the fourth trip.

Album Review...Lamagaia - Lamagaia

Yet another early contender for Album of the Year comes in the form of kosmische laden, psych rock from Sweden' via Gothenburg's Lamagaia.  This is a split release from 2 labels with a reputation for ensuring their output is constantly interesting, challenging and most importantly mind meltingly good. 'Lamagaia' is the follow up to the self released 'Lamagius' this time released via Sunrise Ocean Bender and Cardinal Fuzz records.

First track up is 'Aurora'; drums pound rhythmically over a wall of growling guitars and noise, as the song builds, and builds relentlessly
It’s a Fuzzed up, mesmerising song that flys through its 16 minute length, going by in what feels like just a few minutes.  Its intensity builds and envelopes,  taking you along on its journey of sonic, psychedelic magic. Side B 'Paronama Vju' appears to follows a less abrasive path, at first, whilst remaining vivid; the track evolves over a repetitive groove of drones, drums and bass, whilst guitars freeform its way forward to a peak, before winding its way down to its rippling close. Lamagaia's self titled offering is an incredible record; both tracks deliver one of the most immersive listening experiences you'll have right now. Like the bands debut before, this record will keep you coming back to relive and discover the treasures within.
The decision to split the release between 2 labels is a sound on; the addictive noise within both suits the psychedelic styles of past SOB releases as well as the more explosive and urgent releases from The Good Cardinal; one can only hope that between both camps enough people will be turned on to this fantastic record.
Highly recommended.

Ive included a link to to the self released Lamagaius which is currently up on You Tube as thats also well worth your time and attention.
